Abstract

The influence of genotype (Cambodian Kondol and Kondol x Duroc) on performance traits and digestibility indices was studied in eight piglets (average initial weight, 10 kg) during 28 days. Feed consumption of a simple diet consisting of wheat bran and fresh water dry fish (9:1 in dry basis) was ad libitum.

Daily feed intake and gain were not significantly influenced by the genotype (Kondol 0.94 kg DM and 292 g; KondolxDuroc 1.02 kg DM and 294 g).

There were no significant effect of treatment (P>0.05) on digestibility of DM, organic matter and N as estimated by the indirect method (Kondol 76.9, 83.4 and 75.8% respectively; KondolxDuroc 74.8, 83.2 and 76.6% respectively). There were no evident correspondence amongst digestibility indices and performance traits of the animals, probably due to the short length of the trial.

Low voluntary feed intake and rate of growth in Kondol pigs could be understood from the point of view that this genotype has never been improved either by selection or crossing. The use of the indirect method for estimating total digestibility of nutrients proved to be highly appropriated in on station conditions of performance tests. This method can also be employed on farm and then, can be extended to rural areas, where simple and readily approaches to the nutritive value of non conventional feeds are of a high priority.
